Not sure which steam room you have? The 120V model plugs into regular wall outlets and usually has two or three portable steamers, each with its own small temperature controller. The 240V model has a black VEVOR steam generator with a digital touch control panel and runs on a dedicated 240V outlet installed by an electrician.

Note: the sauna and 240V steam room instructions are for the VEVOR sauna heaters and steam generators we usually install. If your unit has a different brand of heater or steam generator, some steps and controls may be different. Follow that manufacturer's manual, and contact us if you have any questions.

Traditional sauna (VEVOR heater)

Traditional sauna in Valera with VEVOR heater

At a glance

Dry heat from an electric VEVOR heater with sauna stones, controlled with a timer dial and a heat dial.

Before first use

  • A licensed electrician must install the dedicated 240V circuit and outlet for the heater. Saunas with infrared need a second, separate circuit. Never use an extension cord or adapter.
  • Place the stones loosely in the heater basket, leaving gaps so air can flow. Never run the heater without its stones.
  • The first time, heat the empty sauna for about 1 hour. A light smell from the new heater and wood is normal and goes away.
VEVOR sauna heater with its two dials

The VEVOR heater has two dials on it: a timer dial and a heat dial. There is no temperature display or thermometer, so adjust the heat by how it feels. (Some other heater brands have a thermometer or digital display. If yours does, follow that manufacturer's manual.)

How to use

1
Check first. Make sure nothing is on or near the heater (towels, clothes, the bucket, plastic) and the heater guard is in place.
2
Set the timer dial to how long you want the heater to run, including preheat time. Each mark is about 30 minutes, up to 3 hours. The heater turns off by itself when the time runs out.
3
Set the heat dial. Turn it up for more heat and down for less. Start around the middle and adjust from there. If it feels too hot, turn the heat dial down or step out. Start lower if you're new to saunas.
4
Preheat with the door closed for about 30–45 minutes.
5
Time your session with the sand timer. We recommend 10–15 minutes (5–10 minutes for beginners), and never more than 20 minutes at a time.
6
For more humidity, use the ladle to pour a small amount of water slowly onto the hot stones. The burst of steam is very hot, so keep your face and hands back. Use clean water only. Never pour water on the heater body or controls. Never put essential oils, alcohol, or anything flammable directly on the stones.
7
Cool down between rounds. Step out, drink water, and rest at least 10 minutes before going back in.
8
When you finish, turn the timer dial back to zero to turn the heater off, take the bucket out, and leave the door open so the wood can dry. Sit on a towel to protect the wood, and clean benches with mild soap and water only.

If your sauna has infrared

  • Turn the infrared timer dial to the time you want (up to 60 minutes). The panels and red lights turn off by themselves when the timer runs out.
  • Infrared panels and red light tubes get very hot. Don't touch them, lean on them, or hang towels on them. Don't stare directly into the red lights.
  • You can use infrared alone for gentler heat or together with the heater.

If you added WiFi control

  • With WiFi, you can turn the sauna on and off and set the temperature from your phone. WiFi setups can work a little differently from the steps above, so contact us if you have any questions.
  • Before you start the sauna from your phone, make sure nobody is inside, nothing is on or near the heater, and children and pets can't get in. Never leave it heating unattended for long periods.

🔧 Troubleshooting: sauna

  • Heater won't turn on: make sure the timer dial is turned past zero and the heat dial isn't at its lowest setting. Check the heater's breaker in your electrical panel. If the breaker has tripped, you can reset it once. If it trips again, stop using the sauna and call a licensed electrician.
  • Heater turned off during a session: the timer probably ran out. Turn the timer dial again.
  • Takes too long to heat or doesn't get hot enough: turn the heat dial up, and keep the door fully closed while preheating. Make sure the stones are loose, not packed tight. Outdoors in cold weather, allow extra preheat time.
  • Smell when heating: a light smell during the first few uses is normal. If there is smoke, or the smell continues or gets stronger, turn the heater off at the breaker, check that nothing is touching the heater, and call us.
  • Infrared panels or red lights won't turn on: turn the timer dial and check the infrared breaker, which is a separate circuit. If only one panel or light is out, call us.
  • WiFi app won't connect: check that your home WiFi is working and the controller is within range of your router, then restart the app. If it still won't connect, call us.

Steam room: 120V (standard, plug-in)

Fly Geyser steam room with outside bench

At a glance

Plug-in steam room with 2 or 3 portable steamers, each with its own temperature controller. Recommended temperature: 115°F.

Most 120V steam rooms have 2 or 3 steamers, and each steamer has its own temperature controller. Do every step below on each steamer and controller.

Before first use

  • Each steamer uses 1,500 W. Plug each temperature controller into its own dedicated 110–120V, 20 A outlet on its own circuit, and don't plug anything else into that circuit. With 2 or 3 steamers, you need 2 or 3 separate circuits. An electrician can add a dedicated outlet for each one.
  • Do not use extension cords or power strips.
  • Check that each steam head is tight, with the small cup facing up and the large steam hole facing down. Check that each controller's thermostat tip is inserted into the cabin.

How to use

1
Fill each steamer. Take the hose off the back of the steamer, then pour in exactly 1 gallon (3.8 L) of clean, filtered water. Don't overfill: stay below the "max" line. Reconnect the hose firmly. Repeat for every steamer. Never run a steamer without water.
2
Connect the power. Plug each steamer's power cord into the "HEAT" outlet on its own temperature controller, then plug each controller into its own wall outlet.
3
Turn on each controller and set the temperature. Press Power. Hold Set for 3 seconds until the display blinks, then use ▲ and ▼ to choose your temperature. Repeat on every controller and set them all to the same temperature. We recommend 115°F (46°C). Start lower if you're new to steam. Each steamer heats until the cabin reaches that temperature, then cycles off and on by itself.
4
Preheat with the door closed for 15–20 minutes.
5
Time your session. We recommend 10–15 minutes, and never more than 20 minutes at a time.
6
Refilling: one gallon gives each steamer about 1–2 hours of steam. If a steamer runs dry, turn its controller OFF, wait until the steam stops, refill it with 1 gallon of water, then turn that controller back ON and let it heat up again. The tank and hose are hot, so be careful.
7
Turn them all off when you finish. Press Power on every controller. The steamers do not shut off by themselves when the water runs out, so always turn each one off yourself to avoid damaging it.

Aromatherapy

Add essential oils only while the steamers are unplugged and cool. Put up to 3 drops in the small cup on top of a steam head before you turn the steamers on. Never add oils while a steamer is on or hot, because you could be burned.

After each use

  • Turn every controller off and unplug them when you're not using the steam room.
  • Use the squeegee to push water on the floor and walls into the drain.
  • Indoor models: open the water tray drawers at the front of the base, take out the trays, and empty them. Outdoor models drain directly to the ground.
  • Leave the door open until the inside is dry. Clean it like a shower; regular bathroom cleaners and disinfectants are fine.

🔧 Troubleshooting: 120V steam room

  • No steam from one steam head: check that steamer's own controller is on and that the steamer is plugged into the controller's "HEAT" outlet. Check that its tank has water. If the cabin is already at the set temperature, the steamer pauses until it cools down; that is normal.
  • Outlet or breaker keeps shutting off: two steamers are probably on the same circuit, or something else is. Each steamer needs its own dedicated 20 A circuit, with no extension cords. You can reset the breaker once. If it keeps tripping, stop and call a licensed electrician.
  • Steam stopped during a session: a tank probably ran dry. Turn that steamer's controller off, wait for the steam to stop, refill with 1 gallon, and turn it back on.
  • Hot water spitting from a steam head: that tank was probably overfilled. Use exactly 1 gallon per steamer. A few drips when it first starts are normal.
  • Doesn't get hot enough: make sure every steamer is filled and every controller is on and set to the same temperature. Keep the door fully closed, preheat for the full 15–20 minutes, and check that each thermostat tip is inside the cabin. Outdoors in cold weather, heating takes longer, so use a cover.
  • A controller's temperature reading looks wrong: check that its thermostat tip is plugged into that controller and inserted into the cabin through the back panel.
  • Water leaking under the cabin: empty the water trays more often and make sure the drawers are pushed all the way in. Check that the cabin is level. For indoor setups, make sure the seams are sealed with silicone.
  • Steam leaking at the hose or steam head: turn the steamer off and let it cool, then tighten the hose connection and the steam head.

Steam room: 240V (VEVOR steam generator)

Beppu steam room with outside bench

At a glance

A VEVOR steam generator with a digital control panel on a dedicated 240V circuit. Water comes from a plumbed line or a tray and pump.

Before first use

  • A licensed electrician must install a dedicated 240V circuit and outlet for the generator, following local codes. Breaker size, wire gauge, and outlet type depend on your model, so call us for the Electrical Requirements sheet.
  • Outdoors, all outlets and boxes must be weatherproof (NEMA 3R minimum) with in-use covers. Never use extension cords or adapters.

Your water setup

Your generator comes with one of two water setups:

  • Plumbed: the generator is connected directly to your home's water line and fills itself. Keep the water supply valve open whenever you use the steam room. Plumbing connections must be made by a licensed plumber.
  • Tray and pump: you pour water into the tray by hand. A pump moves the water from the tray to the generator, and the generator drains back into the tray. Fill the tray with clean water before every session, and never let it run dry.

How to use

1
Check the water. Plumbed: make sure the water valve is open. Tray and pump: fill the tray with clean water and make sure the hose that pulls water from the tray is sitting at the bottom of the tray.
2
Turn it on with the power button on the control panel.
3
Set the temperature with the up and down arrows. We recommend 115°F (46°C); start lower if you're new to steam. The generator can go higher, but we do not recommend going above 115°F.
4
Set the run time so the generator shuts off by itself. Use your preheat time plus your session length (for example, 30–40 minutes).
5
Preheat with the door closed for about 15–20 minutes. A little water dripping from the steam head at first is normal.
6
Time your session. We recommend 10–15 minutes, and never more than 20 minutes at a time.
7
Turn it off with the power button when you finish. The generator may drain after it shuts off, either into your drain line (plumbed) or back into the tray. That water is very hot.

Never

  • Never block, cap, or put a valve on the steam line, and never tamper with the pressure relief valve.
  • Never touch the steam head, pipes, drain line, or generator while it is running or still hot.
  • Never touch or empty the tray right after use. Let the water cool first.

After each use

  • Squeegee water on the floor and walls into the drain, and leave the door open until the inside is dry.
  • Tray and pump: once the water has cooled, empty and rinse the tray regularly and refill it with fresh, clean water.

🔧 Troubleshooting: 240V steam room

  • Control panel is blank or won't turn on: check the generator's breaker in your electrical panel. If it has tripped, you can reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call a licensed electrician.
  • No steam: make sure the set temperature is above the current cabin temperature and the run time hasn't run out. Give the generator a few minutes to heat up. Then check the water supply (see the next item).
  • "No water" light is on: the generator isn't getting water.
    • Plumbed: check that the water valve is open.
    • Tray and pump: check that the tray has water. Check that the hose that pulls water from the tray is sitting at the bottom of the tray, fully under water. When the pump is working, you should hear it buzzing and see water flowing through the hoses. If the pump is silent or no water is moving, turn the generator off and call us.
  • Weak steam, or air or steam escaping: turn the generator off and let it cool. Then make sure all hoses and connections are tightened and nothing is leaking air or steam. Check that the steam line isn't kinked or crushed. Over time, hard water can build up scale inside the generator; contact us about descaling.
  • Water dripping from the steam head when it starts: this is normal condensation.
  • Water or steam coming from the pressure relief valve: turn the generator off, switch off its breaker, and call us. Don't try to adjust the valve.
  • Error code on the display: turn the generator off, switch off its breaker for one minute, check the water supply, and turn it back on. If the code comes back, write it down and call us.
